Though the weather was far from perfect, Georgia Southern weathered the storm to pick up a huge win over Western Michigan.

The atmosphere of Statesboro, Georgia, on a Georgia Southern game day is always filled with high energy. Anticipation and excitement infect the town as if it is ready to explode. And last Saturday was no different, as Eagle fans awoke excited to head to Paulson Stadium for the first home game of the season. The Statesboro weather, unfortunately, had other plans. Storms brewed on the horizon throughout the day with heavy rains falling, putting a damper on the town. However, that storm did everything but put a damper on the spirits of Georgia Southern Football fans.

Although it literally rained on many students parade, it did not deter their spirits or fandom. Paulson Stadium was packed even before kickoff, with rains still falling. The high spirits and optimism of over 23,000 Eagle fans brightened the stadium despite the rain. It was as if it was 75 and sunny. Anxious, excited, and many soaking wet, fans anticipated kickoff. Suddenly the rain stopped, just in time. The storm had passed and created the most beautiful pink sky as the backdrop for the Eagles to kickoff their first home game of the season against Western Michigan. The turnaround of Saturday’s weather was much like the turnaround the Eagles experienced from their game against West Virginia. The Eagles’ improvement did not go unnoticed.

With a victory under their belts and a couple records broken, the Eagles officially recovered from week one, much like their fans recovered from the storm. Junior running back Matt Breida led the Eagles to victory, scoring four of the team’s five touchdowns. His success earned him the honor of Sun Belt Offensive Student Athlete of The Week. In addition, senior safety Antonio Glover had seven tackles and three interceptions, which tied the record for most interceptions made by an Eagle at Paulson Stadium.

The Eagles’ home field advantage and support, despite the earlier conditions, leave them ready to pack Paulson “one more time” as they take on The Citadel this Saturday. Same place, same time. Eagle fans, you dont want to miss it.
