After previously being hit with a felony malicious wounding charge, Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes has now officially been kicked out of school.

Holmes, who was expected to compete for the starting job in the Hokies’ backfield, was convicted of assault and battery. He has been given a one-year suspended sentence for his conviction.

According to a report by The Associated Press, the decision to kick Holmes out of school was made by a student judicial panel.

Holmes started five games for Virginia Tech last season, rushing for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

The Hokies will now turn to either J.C. Coleman or Trey Edmunds to earn the starting job at running back.
