With Saturday’s result, both Samford and Georgia Southern currently sit with one loss each in the SoCon.

STATESBORO, Ga – Jerick McKinnon rushed for 162 yards, and the Georgia Southern defense held the Samford offense scoreless in the second half, as the Eagles earned a critical 36-15 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday in Paulson Stadium.

Relieving Ezayi Youyoute of his quarterback duties in the second quarter, McKinnon took little time in making a profound impact on the game.

On his first play from scrimmage, McKinnon ran 14 yards for a Georgia Southern first down. A few plays later, McKinnon kept the ball on an option play, and rumbled 41 yards for a touchdown.

The Samford offense was able to gain significant yardage during the first half of play, but a second quarter interception thrown by Andy Summerlin was returned 71 yards for a touchdown by Lavelle Westbrooks, giving the Eagles a 21-10 lead heading into the break.

The Eagle defense would turn up the intensity from there, however, as the Bulldogs gained less than 15 yards of total offense during the third quarter.

Samford’s only points of the second half came on Jaquiski Tartt’s 80-yard fumble return midway through the third quarter.

As the Georgia Southern defense was warming up, so was the Eagles’ option attack.

McKinnon rushed 67 yards for a touchdown just one play after Tartt’s fumble recovery. Dominique Swope added a 40-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

On the evening, the Eagles ran the ball 53 times for 360 yards.

With Saturday’s result, both Samford and Georgia Southern currently sit with one loss each in the SoCon.
