Saturday’s stunning result came with Mississippi State and Auburn being on two sides of the same historic performance.

Midway through the second quarter, Mississippi State was down, on the road, to Auburn 28-3. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs were leading 43-28.

Saturday’s stunning result came with Mississippi State and Auburn being on two sides of the same historic performance. The comeback marked the largest ever for the Bulldogs and, correspondingly, the biggest blown lead in a loss for the Tigers. In a little less than two full periods of play, Mississippi State scored an unfathomable 40 consecutive points. The 43-34 win ultimately got the Bulldogs bowl eligible. How Mississippi State got to that point, however, is what will be talked about for years.

Standout quarterback Will Rogers was the catalyst in the comeback. He completed 44-of-55 passes for 415 yards and six touchdowns, one of just nine SEC signal callers this millennium with those minimums in a single game. Rogers is now at nearly 75.7% completions for the season, which is on pace to be one of the highest rates ever in the SEC. Ten different Bulldogs had at least 15 yards receiving on the Plains, with Makai Polk, Jamire Calvin and Malik Heath all catching fourth quarter scores.

With three wins in four games, Mississippi State has notable momentum, having beaten nationally-ranked Kentucky and now nationally-ranked Auburn in that span. The Bulldogs next have Tennessee State before rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl.

Mississippi State has been playing some of the best football in the SEC. The second half against the Tigers was the ultimate example.
